Harp, Fiddle, and Song with Dominique Dodge and Robert Ryan
Husband and wife duo, Dominique Dodge and Robert Ryan, breathe vivid life into timeless songs and melodies born of the Irish and Scottish emigration experience. Raised in an Irish family in England, Robert has been playing the fiddle and whistle since his earliest days, gathering songs along the way. Dominique, a northern New Hampshire native, holds a BA Honors in Scottish Music from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and spent childhood summers immersed in the vibrant musical culture of Cape Breton Island. After falling in love with Robert, and with Irish music, she went on to earn an MA in Irish Music Performance from The University of Limerick as a Fulbright Scholar.
This young couple has built a home for themselves in the Champlain Valley, where they teach and perform traditional arts, work for local businesses, and serve their communities through volunteer work. Their love for their music and for each other shines through each performance and the sharing of emigration music is a heartfelt expression of their lived experience. All proceeds from these concerts will go towards funding their immigration costs. Join Robert and Dominique for an evening of beautiful music and help them remain rooted in their chosen community.
Come prepared for an evening of heartrending songs, raucous dance tunes, and haunting airs. This music is warm, lively, and replete with longing; as likely to make you laugh in one measure as it is to break your heart in the next. Dominique and Robert carry songs with strength and nuance, resonating in harmony or melting into unison, as they align phrasing and speech rhythms as only family can. The gritty pulse of Robert’s fiddle is glad company for the sparkling melodic lines of Dominique’s harp, underpinned by her responsive accompaniment. Though small in stature, these two young musicians create a mighty sound, textured with reverence and depth, as they pause every now and again to share stories and insights with humor and grace.
