In Song and in Story: 250 Years in the Co. Mayo

Co Mayo 550X330

Friday, March 13, 2015 – Noon to 1PM

Andy Naughton presents a program of historical and family songs and stories learned from his father, Patrick Naughton (1902-1998).

Andy’s family came to the Co. Mayo in 1691 after the siege of Limerick ended with the Treaty of Limerick and the Second Flight of the Wild Geese having participated in the siege, the Battle of Athlone and finally the Battle of Aughrim.

For the next 250 years, until they sold the farm in 1949, they survived quietly as subsistence farmers and seasonal migratory farm laborers. History would occasionally intervene: first in 1798 when a French fleet landed in Killala and achieved a great victory in Castlebar; then came the Famine and survival; then the Mayo Land League which would develop into the Irish Land League; and finally the 1916 revolution and the Black & Tan war.
