The second feature in this year’s “Selkie-fest,” Ondine (2009) follows a down and out Irish fisherman, played by Colin Farrell, whose luck suddenly changes for the better. The film features a similar mythic storyline to Song of the Sea but with a contemporary twist mostly uncovered by the Farrell character’s young daughter.
Betsey Sharkey of the Los Angeles Times praised the cinematography and directing, writing: “(Director Neil) Jordan uses the push and pull between real life and legend to explore ideas of social ills, retribution, justice, family bonds and miracles in an age in which it seems there are none.”
The film was rated PG-13 for some violence, sensuality and brief strong language by the MPAA
